A380 to Antarctica
Qantas Airways will operate its Airbus A380 over Antarctica this summer on a unique New Year’s Eve sightseeing flight.

The trip will start in Sydney and fly via Melbourne, with passengers over the ice at midnight to be the first in the world to see the light of the new year.

There are also two other Antarctic flights planned - a second A380 service ex Sydney on 24 January, and a 747-400 flight from Melbourne on 14 February.

The private charters are being organised by Antarctica Sightseeing Flights, which is run by Croydon Travel.

Croydon Travel said passengers would “make aviation history aboard the first commercial flight by an A380 to the south polar region.”

Air New Zealand Confident

Air New Zealand has responded to the debut of Jetstar domestic New Zealand services, saying it will 'compete vigorously with everyday low fares and a high level of service.'

'Frequency is a critical factor for domestic travellers,' a statement said, emphasising Air New Zealand’s more than 400 return services a week between Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Queenstown.

The carrier also cited recent investments including its fast and simple check-in experience, new lounges, and complimentary onboard food and beverages.

Air New Zealand has reported its January traffic figures, which were down 8% to 923,000 for the month.

Long-haul numbers slipped 11%, while short-haul passenger numbers were down 7.2%.

Virgin Blue Grounds Planes

Virgin Blue will cut capacity by about 8% in 2009/2010 by grounding five aircraft and keeping them on hand as 'operational spares.'

The carrier said the move would affect up to 400 full time jobs, with analysts speculating that the capacity reductions were most likely to affect frequencies on key trunk routes.
